Archos' £131 iPad 2 Rival Tablet Lands

Although it might be pretentious to call the Archos Arnova 10 a proper iPad 2 rival, the fact that it costs less than a third the price of the Apple's tablet means that many will forgive its shortcomings.

The tablet is currently available on sale from Insight for £130.79 including VAT and will be ordered upon request by the online retailer.

And the least we can say is that it comes with some decent configuration; there's a Rockchip RK2818 ARM9 system on chip clocked at 600MHz, Android OS 2.1, a 10-inch resistive touchscreen with a resolution of 1024x600 pixels, 4GB onboard storage, possibly 256MB RAM, microSD, Wi-Fi, a front facing VGA camera, two USB 2.0 ports and a weight of 570g.

Unfortunately, there's no rear camera, 3G connectivity or HDMI port and the presence of Eclair means that there's no Wi-Fi hotspot or support for Flash yet. Plus Archos has its own proprietary version of the Google Android market with oer 25,000 apps.

Archos says that the device - which was released earlier this year - will be able to deliver 40 hours worth of music playback or up to six hours video. There will be an updated version coming up, potentially with Honeycomb, a capacitive touchscreen and perhaps more importantly, a 1GHz system on chip.
